DES MOINES, IA – Kacey Alyn Duall Bruse, a 23-year-old former resident of Urbandale, Iowa, will spend the next 70 months in federal prison after being sentenced on June 5, 2019, for Possession of Child Pornography. U.S. District Judge Rebecca Goodgame Ebinger handed down the sentence, followed by a six-year term of supervised release. The sentence reflects the gravity of Bruse’s depraved actions and a commitment to protecting vulnerable children.
The investigation, which began in June 2017, revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior. An undercover Urbandale Police Officer discovered images of child pornography originating from an IP address traced back to Bruse. He wasn’t just downloading – Bruse was actively making these horrific files available to others through a peer-to-peer file sharing program, amplifying the abuse and spreading it further online. This wasn’t a passive act; it was deliberate distribution of exploitation.
A search warrant executed at Bruse’s Urbandale residence in June 2017 yielded damning evidence. Authorities seized computer equipment containing a trove of depictions of child pornography. The timeline of the investigation showed Bruse’s involvement spanned from approximately March 13, 2014, to June 21, 2017 – nearly four years of systematically downloading and possessing this vile material. This was a sustained and calculated offense.
Judge Ebinger didn’t stop at imprisonment. Bruse was also ordered to pay $3,000 to each victim identified through the investigation, providing a small measure of restitution for the immense harm he inflicted. While no amount of money can truly compensate for such trauma, it’s a crucial step in acknowledging the suffering and attempting to provide some support to those affected.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Urbandale Police Department and bolstered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Child Exploitation Task Force and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. These agencies worked tirelessly to uncover the extent of Bruse’s crimes and bring him to justice. The Southern District of Iowa’s United States Attorney’s Office successfully prosecuted the case, ensuring accountability for this heinous act.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dark underbelly of the internet and the predators who exploit vulnerable children. Law enforcement continues to aggressively pursue those involved in the creation, distribution, and possession of child pornography. Anyone with information regarding such crimes is urged to contact their local authorities or the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
