Bryan C. Byers, Robbery, Missouri 2022

Independence, MO – Bryan C. Byers, 23, of Kansas City, Missouri, learned a harsh lesson about picking on the wrong establishment last week. U.S. District Judge Roseann Ketchmark sentenced Byers to six years and six months in federal prison without parole after he attempted to rob the Lucky Buffet at 2931 S. Noland Road back in February of 2022. The robbery attempt spectacularly failed when restaurant employees refused to be victims and turned the tables on their would-be assailant.

According to court documents, Byers walked into the Lucky Buffet on February 21st brandishing what appeared to be a Glock handgun. He confronted two employees near the sushi station, allegedly threatening to kill them if they didn’t hand over cash from the register within five seconds. The employees, fearing for their lives, initially complied, opening the cash drawer as Byers began stuffing it with money. But they weren’t about to simply hand over their livelihood.

What Byers didn’t know was that his weapon was a Frankensteinian concoction – the upper portion of a real Glock, jury-rigged to the lower half of an airsoft pistol. It wasn’t a functioning firearm, and the employees quickly realized they had a fighting chance. One employee snatched the weapon from Byers’ grip, and a full-blown brawl erupted. The employees didn’t just restrain Byers; they unleashed a furious counter-attack, throwing plates of food and repeatedly striking him with a chair to prevent his escape.

Police arrived to find Byers already subdued on the restaurant floor, covered in remnants of the buffet’s offerings. Approximately $873, scattered across the floor, was recovered. Byers was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries sustained during the employee-led takedown. The quick thinking and forceful response of the Lucky Buffet staff undoubtedly prevented a potentially tragic outcome.

The case was built by Assistant U.S. Attorney David A. Barnes, with crucial investigative work conducted by the Independence, Missouri Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Byers pleaded guilty to one count of robbery on July 13, 2022. This prosecution is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program designed to reduce violent crime by focusing on the most dangerous offenders.

While Byers may have thought he could intimidate his way to easy money, he instead found himself on the receiving end of a swift and brutal response. The six-year and six-month sentence sends a clear message: attempting to rob honest workers, even with a fake weapon, will be met with the full force of the federal justice system. And sometimes, with a well-aimed chair and a plate of General Tso’s chicken.
