A chilling incident of carjacking shook the streets of south St. Louis on October 28, 2021. Bryant Carless, then 29 years old, pointed a gun at a mother and demanded the keys to her 2014 Hyundai Elantra while she was placing her infant in a car seat.

The victim, who was left shaken, reported the incident to the authorities, and police soon found Carless and recovered the stolen vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed the woman’s wallet, keys, and a Taurus 9mm pistol, which was later linked to Carless.

Following a thorough investigation by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and the FBI, Carless was charged with one count of carjacking and possession and brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. He pleaded guilty to the charges in August.

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge John A. Ross sentenced Carless to 11 years in prison for his crimes. The harsh sentence reflects the severity of the offense and the fear that Carless’ actions instilled in the victims.
