BUFFALO, N.Y. – In a stunning admission of guilt, Dwayne Brice, 37, from Buffalo, NY, faced Senior U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr., after pleading guilty to the theft of government money. The crime carries a heavy penalty, with a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Brice’s misdeeds were uncovered when it was revealed that he had been appointed as a fiduciary by the Department of Veterans Affairs for his elderly father-in-law, who relied on veteran’s benefits. As fiduciary, Brice was entrusted with managing these funds and ensuring they covered his father-in-law’s living expenses.
However, between August 2013 and September 2015, Brice misappropriated approximately $38,904 of the veteran’s benefits he was supposed to protect. A significant portion of this money was squandered at local casinos, a pattern of gambling that would eventually lead to his downfall.
The United States Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General, Criminal Investigations Division, led by Donna L. Neves, conducted an extensive investigation into Brice’s actions before bringing him to justice.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Scott S. Allen, Jr., and Stephanie O. Lamarque are handling the case with determination, ensuring that justice is served for the elderly veteran whose benefits were stolen.
Sentencing for Dwayne Brice is set for July 20, 2017, at 10:30 a.m., where he will face the full weight of his illegal actions. This conviction serves as a stark reminder of the trust placed in fiduciaries and the consequences that follow when that trust is betrayed.
