Buffalo Man Indicted for Social Security Fraud
Ari Elias Baum, a 30-year-old Buffalo resident, has been indicted on serious charges of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits fraud, theft of government property, and making a material false statement. Baum faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
According to the indictment, Baum was out of the United States from March 22, 2013, through August 13, 2013. During that time, he wrongfully collected SSI disability benefits, failing to report his absence from the country as required.
During a redetermination interview conducted on December 19, 2013, Baum stated that he had not been out of the country since March 1, 2013. This false statement led to an overpayment of Social Security benefits totaling $4,277.23.
The investigation into Baum’s actions was led by the United States Social Security Administration, Office of the Inspector General, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Edward J. Ryan and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank T. Pimentel is handling the case, which is a stark reminder of the importance of honesty when dealing with government benefits. Baum’s actions not only cost the government thousands of dollars but also undermine the trust of those who genuinely need these benefits.
The fact that Baum has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and he is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced the indictment, emphasizing the severity of the charges and the potential consequences for Baum if he is found guilty.
