Buffalo Man Sentenced for Food Stamp Scam
BUFFALO, N.Y. – In a shocking case of food stamp fraud, Riyadh Almadrahi, 35, of Lackawanna, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for his involvement in a scheme to exchange food stamp benefits for cash.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert C. Moscati, Almadrahi was a key player in the operation of a deli known as Zip’s Food and Beverage at 896 Niagara Street in Buffalo, where customers’ food stamp benefits were traded for cash in violation of the rules governing the food stamp program.
Almadrahi and his accomplices made a staggering $143,700 in less than two years through these fraudulent transactions, which was a clear abuse of the system meant to help those in need.
The sentencing is the result of a thorough investigation conducted by Special Agents of the United States Department of Agriculture, Office of Inspector General, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, and the New York State Police, Special Investigations Unit.
The case highlights the serious consequences of food stamp fraud, which not only hurts innocent people but also undermines the integrity of the system.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced the sentencing, stating that Almadrahi’s actions were a clear abuse of trust and would not be tolerated.
The court also ordered Almadrahi to pay restitution in the amount of $143,700 to the United States Department of Agriculture, further emphasizing the severity of the punishment.
