Buffalo Man Sentenced On Cocaine Charge

A 24-year-old Buffalo man has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for his role in a cocaine trafficking operation. Ivan Hernandez, 24, was convicted of attempted possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

According to authorities, law enforcement officers intercepted a package mailed from Puerto Rico to a residence on Hudson Street in Buffalo. The package contained a set of audio speakers, secreted inside, four packets of cocaine, each weighing approximately one-eighth of a kilogram.

Hernandez attempted to retrieve the package as it was delivered and was arrested after a sensor alerted that the package was opened. “The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge James J. Hunt, New York Field Division and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, under the direction of Shelly Binkowski, Inspector in Charge of the Boston Division,” said U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Wei Xiang, who handled the case, stated that the investigation was a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies to combat the flow of narcotics into Western New York. “The successful prosecution of this case is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of the DEA and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in their efforts to keep our community safe,” Xiang said.

The sentencing hearing was presided over by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford. Hernandez’s sentence of 30 months in prison marks a significant blow to the local cocaine trafficking operation. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat the illicit trade of narcotics in Western New York.

As a result of the investigation, authorities were able to intercept a significant quantity of cocaine, preventing it from entering the local community. The successful prosecution of this case highlights the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies in the fight against drug trafficking.
