New York – The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has launched a probe into the tragic death of a civilian in Buffalo. This follows a March 5th encounter with members of the Buffalo Police Department (BPD).
The incident unfolded on Minnesota Street, where BPD officers were called to the scene at 10:55 p.m. Upon entering the residence, they found a man wielding knives in each hand. The suspect reportedly fled towards an officer and ignored orders to drop the weapons. One officer deployed a Taser, but the man continued to hold the knives.
In the tense situation that followed, one officer discharged their service weapon, striking the man who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Two knives were recovered from the scene.
Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is tasked with reviewing incidents where police or peace officers may have caused death by act or omission. This law applies to on-duty and off-duty officers, as well as situations involving armed or unarmed suspects, and those in custody or incarcerated.
OSI’s investigation will determine if the incident meets the criteria for a full probe, which is standard procedure when an officer may have been involved in causing death. The preliminary facts of this case are subject to change as the investigation progresses.
This development marks another critical step in addressing police-related deaths and ensuring transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies across New York State.
