A Buffalo woman has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for hiding evidence in her clothes as federal agents searched her residence in connection with an ongoing investigation of her son.
According to court documents, Evelyn Roberson, 61, of Buffalo, N.Y., knowingly concealed tangible objects, including a check, a money order, cash and credit, debit and bank cards, with the intent to obstruct and impede a criminal investigation.
The items, which were obtained from her son’s house and associates, were hidden in her clothing and removed from the house by concealing them on her person when agents attempted to execute a search warrant at her residence.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced the sentencing, stating that ‘as most of the public already knows, it is not just the original crime that can lead to prosecution – it is also the cover-up.’
As we continue to work with the public and law enforcement to rid our communities of crime, let those who knowingly assist criminals now also be on notice that they are not immune from prosecution,’ Hochul added.
The sentencing is the culmination of an investigation on the part of Special Agents of the FBI, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge, Christopher M. Piehota, and the United States Secret Service, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Tracy Gast.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kathleen A. Lynch and Maura K. O’Donnell handled the case.
Roberson’s sentence is a reminder that those who attempt to conceal evidence or obstruct justice will face severe consequences.
The case serves as a warning to those who would aid and abet criminals, and highlights the importance of cooperation with law enforcement in the pursuit of justice.
