Buffalo Woman Pleads Guilty to IRS Scam
Keianna A. Jones, a 29-year-old Buffalo woman, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the Internal Revenue Service. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross, Jones conspired with others to submit false claims for income tax refunds. The scheme involved obtaining blank W-2 forms from local businesses and altering legitimate W-2 forms to maximize the refund. A portion of the refund received would go to Jones.
The investigation, led by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division, under the direction of Special Agent-In-Charge Shantelle P. Kitchen, revealed that the loss to the government totaled $54,316.00.
Jones, who is set to be sentenced on January 21, 2015, before Chief U.S. District Judge William M. Skretny, faces a significant prison sentence and fine. The guilty plea is a result of a thorough investigation by the IRS.
The case highlights the importance of tax compliance and the consequences of tax evasion. It also underscores the need for businesses and individuals to be vigilant in protecting sensitive information, such as W-2 forms.
The IRS has been cracking down on tax scams in recent years, and this case is a reminder of the agency’s commitment to protecting taxpayers and preventing tax fraud.
The guilty plea is a significant blow to Jones and those involved in the scheme. It is a reminder that tax evasion is a serious crime that can result in severe consequences.
