SAVANNAH, GA – The stench of betrayal hangs heavy over Fort Stewart. Austin Michael Burak, 32, of Oak Harbor, WA, will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being sentenced on Thursday, September 4, 2025, for the horrific sexual abuse of two young boys. The former Army soldier was convicted following a jury trial in the Southern District of Georgia, a verdict that finally brought some measure of accountability for years of sickening predation.
U.S. District Court Chief Judge R. Stan Baker delivered the sentence: lifetime imprisonment for each of the two minor victims. While the legal system often feels broken, in this case, the punishment appears to fit the crime. U.S. Attorney Meg E. Heap made it clear: “There are appropriately severe consequences for sexually assaulting children,” she stated. “We will continue to aggressively prosecute those who prey on the most innocent among us. The community is safer now that a sexual predator will spend the rest of his life imprisoned.” The minimum sentence Burak faced was 30 years, but the judge clearly saw the depravity of his actions demanded far more.
Courtroom testimony painted a chilling picture of Burak’s calculated cruelty. Back in August of 2017, while stationed at Fort Stewart, Burak systematically violated two young boys in their own homes, preying on them as they slept. The details are gruesome, and we at Grimy Times will not re-traumatize anyone by repeating them in full. But the damage he inflicted will undoubtedly last a lifetime for these victims. This wasn’t a single incident; it was a pattern of abuse.
The scope of Burak’s depravity extended beyond these two victims. Three additional witnesses testified at trial, recounting their own experiences of sexual assault at Burak’s hands when they were minors. One witness detailed years of abuse, painting a picture of a predator who systematically exploited vulnerable children. This wasn’t an isolated incident; it was a sustained campaign of terror. The fact that it took this long to bring him to justice is a damning indictment of the systems meant to protect our children.
Federal agencies worked tirelessly to bring Burak to justice. Paul Brown, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta, emphasized the bureau’s unwavering commitment to protecting children: “This sentence ensures that Austin Burak will never again have the opportunity to harm another child, and it demonstrates the dedication of our agents and law enforcement partners who work tirelessly to bring justice to survivors of these heinous crimes.” Michele Starostka, Special Agent in Charge of the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division’s Western Field Office, added that the sentencing “represents a significant outcome in the pursuit of justice.”
The case was a collaborative effort, investigated by Army CID at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, and the FBI. Assistant United States Attorneys Sherri A. Stephan and Michael Z. Spitulnik skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring Burak faced the full weight of the law. While no sentence can truly repair the damage done, this conviction sends a clear message: those who abuse children will be held accountable, and justice, however delayed, will eventually be served. The fight to protect our children is far from over, but this is a small victory in a long and brutal war.
