SIoux Falls, SD – In a swift and decisive move, U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier has sentenced Verran Burdunice, a 60-year-old Brooklyn Park, Minnesota man, to 10 years in federal prison for his conviction of Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute.
The sentencing took place on May 6, 2024, marking the culmination of a long and arduous investigation into Burdunice’s illicit activities. As revealed in court, Burdunice was involved in a controlled purchase of crack cocaine, which ultimately led to his arrest and subsequent conviction.
On February 1, 2023, Burdunice met with an individual who was working with law enforcement to conduct a sting operation. Following the meeting, law enforcement conducted a traffic stop of Burdunice’s vehicle in Brookings, South Dakota, where they discovered approximately 212 grams of methamphetamine. A subsequent laboratory analysis confirmed that the methamphetamine was 100% pure.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Brookings Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Hodges handling the prosecution. Burdunice was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing.
Burdunice’s conviction serves as a stark reminder of the harsh consequences of engaging in illicit activities. His sentence sends a clear message that those involved in the trafficking of controlled substances will be held accountable for their actions.
As Burdunice begins his 10-year sentence, he will also face an additional five years of supervised release. Furthermore, he has been ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
