Jeffrey Burlingame, Methamphetamine and Firearms Trafficking, NM 2023

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Jeffrey Burlingame, 59, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 84 months – seven years – for his role in a methamphetamine and firearms trafficking operation. The sentence, handed down today in federal court, also includes three years of supervised release after Burlingame serves his time.

The case dates back to February 2016, when law enforcement agents executed a search warrant at an Albuquerque residence. Burlingame was present during the search, which uncovered a significant haul: 450.55 grams of pure methamphetamine, along with cash, firearms, ammunition, and drug paraphernalia. The initial arrest came on a criminal complaint charging him with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

A federal grand jury indicted Burlingame on March 23, 2016, leveling charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and, crucially, carrying a firearm in relation to a drug trafficking crime. Prosecutors successfully argued that Burlingame’s possession of the weapon directly aided his illegal drug activities, adding a serious penalty to the charges.

Burlingame ultimately pled guilty on November 28, 2016, to both counts. In his admission, he confessed to possessing the substantial amount of methamphetamine and a firearm with ammunition at the time of the February 24, 2016 raid. The plea deal didn’t save him from a lengthy prison term, reflecting the severity of the combined offenses.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office spearheaded the investigation, working together to build the case against Burlingame. The collaborative effort underscores the agencies’ commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks in New Mexico.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander M. Uballez led the prosecution, successfully arguing for the seven-year sentence. The case serves as a stark reminder that those involved in the illegal drug trade, especially when combined with firearms, will face serious federal consequences. The Grimy Times will continue to follow federal crime throughout New Mexico and beyond.
