ORLANDO, FL – Byron Louder, 34, is facing serious federal charges after being indicted for possession of a firearm despite a rap sheet that already includes multiple felony drug convictions. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), alongside the Orlando Police Department, brought the case, alleging Louder illegally possessed a Sig Sauer firearm.
The indictment states that on December 25, 2022, Louder was found to be in possession of the weapon. This isn’t a simple gun charge; Louder’s history makes it a serious federal offense. Court records reveal prior convictions for delivery of cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to sell, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell or deliver. These convictions permanently strip him of the right to own or possess any firearm or ammunition under federal law.
If convicted, Louder could spend the rest of his life behind bars. The minimum mandatory sentence is 15 years, but the charge carries a potential life sentence in federal prison. Adding insult to injury, the U.S. Attorney’s Office intends to seize the Sig Sauer allegedly used in the commission of the crime. The government is moving to forfeit the weapon.
U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg of the Middle District of Florida announced the indictment, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to cracking down on violent crime. However, an indictment is merely an accusation. Louder is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
This case isn’t being treated as an isolated incident. It falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement, and the communities they serve. Launched in 2021, the program focuses on building trust, supporting community organizations, and strategically prioritizing enforcement.
Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie A. McNeff is prosecuting the case. While details remain scarce, the ATF’s Tampa Field Division spearheaded the investigation. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available. Louder’s next court date has not yet been announced.
