Pine Ridge Man Charged with Felon in Possession of a Firearm

A 30-year-old Pine Ridge man has admitted to committing a serious crime.

Daniel Thomas, 30, of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on March 27, 2013, and pled guilty to Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

According to court documents, on July 23, 2012, at Red Shirt, Thomas, a previously convicted felon, illegally possessed a Colt Cobra .38 caliber revolver.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman.

The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years’ imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.

A presentence investigation was ordered and a sentencing date will be scheduled. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing.

Residents of Pine Ridge and surrounding areas are concerned about the rise in gun-related crimes.

Thomas’ sentencing date has not been scheduled yet.
