RALEIGH, N.C. – A confirmed member of the Crips gang from Selma, N.C., Deondre Montreal Russell, alias ‘Poo Bear,’ has been handed a 360-month sentence for conspiracy to distribute and possess cocaine and crack. The 34-year-old was convicted by a federal jury on July 19, 2022.
According to court documents, Russell sold drugs to an informant in January 2020 and was caught with nearly 26 grams of crack and 28 grams of cocaine after a traffic stop that escalated into an arrest. The confidential informant reported meeting Russell in summer 2018, during which time they claimed to have purchased over 3,600 grams of meth and 454 grams of crack from the defendant.
In October 2020, while on state probation, Russell was arrested again, this time for carrying a digital scale with cocaine residue, ten grams of marijuana, and a firearm. Additional informants later stated that Russell threatened to use violence against witnesses during his trial.
Russell’s criminal history includes a second-degree murder conviction from 2005, leading to his release in 2016. He was also charged with possession of cocaine and selling marijuana in 2018.
Michael Easley, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, announced the sentence following judgment by U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelly L. Sandling prosecuted the case, while the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office investigated it.
