Felon in Possession of Firearm Charge Rocks Wakpala Community
A Wakpala, South Dakota, man has been accused of breaking federal law after being indicted on a charge of Felon in Possession of Firearm, announced United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson. Ronald Moran, Sr., age 36, was indicted on May 13, 2014, for knowingly possessing and receiving a firearm that had been shipped and transported in interstate and foreign commerce.
Moran’s indictment alleges that on or about January 9, 2014, he knowingly possessed a firearm despite being convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year. The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 10 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation into Moran’s alleged crime is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Law Enforcement Agency. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley is prosecuting the case.
Moran appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge William D. Gerdes on May 20, 2014, and pled not guilty to the Indictment. He was released on bond pending trial, with a trial date yet to be set.
The charge of Felon in Possession of Firearm is a serious offense that carries significant penalties. Moran is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
