In one notable incident, in July 2019, law enforcement stopped Akins Sr. in a rental vehicle, seizing two kilograms of cocaine. In a subsequent traffic stop in March 2020, Akins Sr. was found with approximately $50,600 in drug proceeds.
The investigation and subsequent prosecution of Akins Sr. were handled by Assistant United States Attorney Brendan J. McKenna. United States Attorney Cindy K. Chung commended the law enforcement agencies involved in the case, praising their dedication to bringing the perpetrator to justice.
Akins Sr. will serve 15 years in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release. The sentence was handed down on September 2023, marking a significant victory in the fight against cocaine trafficking in Pittsburgh.
