A 36-year-old Cairo woman has been sentenced to 98 months in prison for her role in the manufacture of methamphetamine. Yalanda Mills was found guilty of possessing items intended for the manufacture of the deadly drug.
Mills, 36, was sentenced by Senior United States District Court Judge W. Louis Sands on May 31, 2018, for her involvement in the methamphetamine manufacture. In addition to the prison sentence, Mills was ordered to pay restitution related to hazardous materials cleanup and medical bills for an officer who was overcome by toxic fumes emitted from the meth lab.
According to court records, Mills had purchased lithium batteries and camp fuel in 2015, which she provided to Cary Brandon Smith for his use in manufacturing methamphetamine in Grady County, Georgia. Smith was not named in the press release.
United States Attorney Charles E. Peeler stated, “The manufacture of methamphetamine in our communities presents a special danger over and above that of the impact of its use on addicts. It creates toxic waste residue which is a hazard to all in the vicinity for years to come without the proper clean-up.”
Peeler stressed that assisting someone in the commission of a crime such as this is a bad decision and that Mills’ acquisition and possession of legal items was crucial to Smith’s ability to carry out his dangerous activity.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Grady County Sheriff’s Office, and Cairo Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Leah E. McEwen prosecuted the case for the United States.
Questions concerning this case should be directed to Pamela Lightsey, Public Information Officer, United States Attorney’s Office, at (478) 621-2603.
