Billings Man Admits Lying to Grand Jury

A Billings man has admitted to lying to a federal grand jury, according to U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich.

Caleb Jason Olson, 21, pleaded guilty to an indictment charging him with false declaration before a grand jury. The crime occurred on December 15, 2021, when Olson testified before the Billings grand jury.

The grand jury was investigating an incident that occurred on October 10, 2019. During his testimony, Olson made false statements about the night of the incident and the presence of firearms in his vehicle.

Olson stated that he was unaware that two individuals in his car had firearms and that he did not have a gun that night. However, the government alleges that Olson knew he had brought a firearm in his car that night.

The court will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. Sentencing was set for May 18. Olson was released pending further proceedings.

Olson faces a maximum of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Zeno B. Baucus, Bryan T. Dake, and Benjamin D. Hargrove are prosecuting the case, which was investigated by the FBI.

The incident occurred on October 10, 2019, and the grand jury was investigating the incident when Olson testified on December 15, 2021.

Olson was placed under oath and advised of the potential ramifications should he make a false statement during his testimony. He will face a sentence of up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
