California Counterfeiters Caught, San Gabriel CA, 1954

In a brazen wave of deceit, a fresh influx of counterfeit bills flooded the country just before Christmas 1953. U.E. Baughman, Chief of the U.S. Secret Service, revealed that his agents were kept busy tracking down the scammers as the bogus notes were passed on to retail storekeepers in numerous sections of the nation. The fake bills, described by Baughman as ‘excellent workmanship,’ were in circulation, including $15, $10, and $20 notes.
