On a cold February morning in 1954, Robert Friel, a 27-year-old from Council Bluffs, stormed into the Des Moines tax office, armed with a tub full of silver dollars and a burning desire for revenge. Friel’s parents had been hounded by tax collectors during an investigation into his finances, and he had had enough. In a dramatic display of defiance, Friel poured two buckets of blood over the silver dollars, claiming they were now worthless.
