FITCHBURG, WI – Calvin Henderson, 46, is headed to federal prison for four years after admitting to illegally possessing firearms as a convicted felon. U.S. District Judge William M. Conley handed down the sentence yesterday, citing Henderson’s extensive and violent criminal history.
The case unfolded on January 26, 2023, when law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Henderson’s Fitchburg apartment. Inside, they discovered three handguns and materials used for drug packaging. Henderson confessed to owning one of the weapons and, in a frantic attempt to destroy evidence, admitted to flushing cocaine down the toilet as officers approached.
This wasn’t Henderson’s first run-in with the law. Court records reveal prior felony convictions for substantial battery and, ironically, possessing a firearm as a felon. Judge Conley didn’t mince words, recalling a particularly brutal incident from Henderson’s past: a horrific pistol-whipping of another individual when he was just 27 years old. The judge clearly saw a pattern of escalating violence.
The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Fitchburg Police Department, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), revealed a dangerous combination: a felon with a history of violence and a penchant for firearms while allegedly involved in drug dealing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan prosecuted the case.
Federal authorities are framing Henderson’s sentencing as a win for Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Justice Department program focused on reducing violent crime through coordinated law enforcement efforts. PSN targets gun crime, specifically focusing on felons illegally possessing firearms and the intersection of gun violence with drug trafficking.
Henderson’s four-year sentence sends a clear message: repeat offenders with a history of violence and illegal firearms will face significant consequences. The Grimy Times will continue to monitor federal cases like this, holding those who endanger our communities accountable for their actions. The case number has not been released.
