Pittsburgh Man Arrested for Bank Robberies Admits to Crimes in Court
A Pittsburgh man, Calvin Leavy, has been accused of robbing two banks in the city, and he has now pleaded guilty to the charges. The 68-year-old former resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, appeared in federal court before Senior United States District Judge David S. Cercone, where he admitted to the crimes.
Leavy pleaded guilty to three counts of bank robbery, which occurred on January 31, 2022, and February 8, 2022. During the robberies, Leavy entered the First National Bank and the PNC Bank, both located in Pittsburgh. He demanded money from the bank employees, claiming he had a gun. However, in the first robbery, he left the bank without receiving any money. In the second robbery, he took approximately $1,338 from the PNC Bank. The following week, he returned to the First National Bank and took approximately $1,238.
According to investigators, Leavy used a Port Authority bus to travel to and from each of the bank robberies and paid for the fare using his bus card. Surveillance footage helped track Leavy’s movements, leading investigators to locate and arrest him. Leavy was found wearing the same clothing he wore during the robberies.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, which led to the prosecution of Calvin Leavy. Assistant United States Attorney Rebecca L. Silinski is handling the case on behalf of the United States.
Leavy’s sentence is pending and is scheduled for May 16, 2023, at 11:00 AM. The law provides for a total sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. The actual sentence will be determined by the seriousness of the offenses and Leavy’s prior criminal history, if any.
Calvin Leavy remains in custody pending sentencing.
