A Fort Myers, Florida, judge has handed down a five-year prison sentence to Cambrel Jamal Smart, 29, of Fort Lauderdale, for his role in a firearms offense. U.S. District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell made the ruling on a case that involved Smart being found with a loaded firearm and ammunition in a vehicle he was driving.
According to court documents, the incident took place on January 5, 2022, when a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper pulled over Smart’s vehicle after it was spotted traveling at a high speed on I-75 in Collier County. During the stop, the Trooper noticed a clear plastic baggy containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana in the center console. A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded firearm between the front and back passenger-side seats, which was later linked to Smart through DNA testing.
Smart, a multi-convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing a firearm and ammunition under federal law. The firearm was found to be loaded with 17 rounds of ammunition. This discovery led to Smart’s guilty plea on December 1, 2022, and ultimately, his five-year prison sentence.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Florida Highway Patrol. Assistant United States Attorney Trent Reichling prosecuted the case. This incident is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities.
Project Safe Neighborhoods is a collaborative effort between law enforcement and community organizations to create safer neighborhoods. The program focuses on fostering trust, supporting community-based initiatives, and setting strategic enforcement priorities to address violent crime and gun violence.
Cambrel Jamal Smart is scheduled to begin serving his five-year prison sentence. The incident serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal laws regarding firearms and ammunition possession. It also highlights the importance of community-based initiatives in preventing violent crime and gun violence.
This case is a stark reminder of the dangers of illegal gun possession and the consequences that come with it. It is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies and their commitment to keeping communities safe.
