Lake Andes Man Charged with Child Pornography

A disturbing case has come to light in South Dakota, where a 24-year-old man from Lake Andes has been charged with Receipt and Distribution of Child Pornography. Cameron Allen Zephier, a resident of Lake Andes, South Dakota, was indicted by a federal grand jury for his alleged involvement in the crime.

According to the indictment, Zephier knowingly received and attempted to receive child pornography between May 6, 2020, and September 30, 2020. This alleged crime is a serious offense, punishable by up to 20 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, life of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

Zephier appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on March 10, 2021, and pled not guilty to the Indictment. The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Charles Mix County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper is prosecuting the case.

Zephier was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set. The charge is merely an accusation, and Zephier is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 20 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, life of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
