RAPID CITY – Matthew Bowman, a 35-year-old man from New Underwood, South Dakota, was sentenced to five years and ten months in federal prison for receiving child pornography.
Bowman was convicted of Receipt of Child Pornography and will be required to register as a sex offender under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.
According to the Department of Justice, Bowman was found to have received child pornography between September of 2020 and July of 2022. Investigators discovered images depicting child sex abuse, with some images showing children as young as four to six years old.
The evidence against Bowman was uncovered through a cybertip from Google Drive and Google Photos, which reported his child pornography collection to law enforcement.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program, launched in May 2006, marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate and prosecute individuals who exploit children.
Bowman was indicted for Receipt of Child Pornography and Possession of Child Pornography by a federal grand jury in November of 2023. He pleaded guilty on January 24, 2024.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Anna Lindrooth prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, and the Rapid City Police Department.
Bowman was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following the sentencing, which took place on May 14, 2024. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Project Safe Childhood is a critical tool in the fight against child exploitation. The program has led to the rescue of countless children and the prosecution of thousands of individuals who have committed these heinous crimes.
The case against Bowman serves as a reminder of the importance of this initiative and the need for continued vigilance in the fight against child sexual exploitation.
