Assault with a Vehicle Lands Man 36 Months in Prison
A 20-year-old Camp Verde man is headed to prison after being sentenced for his role in a violent assault that left the victim seriously injured.
Jose Manuel Lara Jr. was sentenced by U.S. District Judge David G. Campbell to 36 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for his role in the assault with a dangerous weapon. Lara Jr.’s original sentence of 45 months was reduced by nine months to reflect the time he served in tribal custody for the same offense.
The investigation into the assault was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Yavapai-Apache Nation Police Department. The prosecution was handled by Christina Covault, Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
Lara Jr. had previously pleaded guilty to one count of assault with a dangerous weapon. The assault occurred on June 25, 2017, when Lara Jr., an enrolled member of the Yavapai-Apache Nation, ran over the victim, also a member of the Yavapai-Apache Nation, with a vehicle. The victim suffered serious bodily injury and required multiple surgeries.
Lara Jr. is currently in federal custody and will be serving his sentence at a facility to be determined. The Yavapai-Apache Nation Police Department would like to remind the community that violent crime will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
