Cheswick Man Faces Decades Behind Bars in Child Exploitation Case
PITTSBURGH, PA – Mark Philip Campbell, 49, of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, is facing federal charges after being indicted by a grand jury on accusations of distributing and possessing horrific material depicting the sexual exploitation of minors. The indictment, unsealed today, alleges a disturbing pattern of activity spanning over seven months in 2013.
According to the indictment, Campbell allegedly received images and a video containing this deeply disturbing content between February 27, 2013, and September 15, 2013. The charges don’t stop there. Federal prosecutors further allege that Campbell knowingly possessed computer files containing images depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit acts, some of whom were under the age of 12, from February 27, 2013, to October 24, 2013.
United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced the indictment, a grim reminder of the predators lurking in our communities. If convicted on both counts, Campbell could face a maximum total sentence of 30 years in prison, alongside a hefty $500,000 fine. However, the actual sentence will be determined by the seriousness of the offenses and any prior criminal record Campbell may have.
Assistant United States Attorney Jessica Lieber Smolar is leading the prosecution, determined to bring justice in this sickening case. The investigation was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pennsylvania State Police, highlighting the importance of interagency cooperation in combating these heinous crimes.
This case is part of “Project Safe Childhood,” a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to tackle the escalating crisis of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program brings together federal, state, and local law enforcement to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those who prey on children, and, crucially, to rescue the victims.
