SCRANTON, PA – The sterile walls of United States Penitentiary Canaan became a battleground last September when inmate Zachary O’Meara, 28, turned a makeshift weapon on a fellow prisoner. Now, O’Meara is facing the consequences: 45 months behind bars, handed down by United States District Judge Julia K. Munley on September 3, 2025.
According to Acting United States Attorney John Gurganus, the attack unfolded on September 24, 2024. O’Meara repeatedly stabbed another inmate in the head with a weapon crafted from within the prison system – a “shank,” as it’s known on the inside. The victim suffered a gruesome barrage of wounds, requiring surgical intervention to close six lacerations to the back of the head and another to the right temple.
Prison officials quickly recovered the instrument of the assault. The shank, described as five inches in length, was a crude but effective killing tool: constructed of melted plastic, sharpened to a dangerous point with a metal tip. It’s a chilling reminder of the ingenuity – and brutality – that can flourish even within the highly controlled environment of a federal penitentiary.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)—Scranton Office took the lead on the investigation, meticulously piecing together the details of the attack. The evidence presented clearly demonstrated O’Meara’s intent and the severity of the injuries inflicted. This case highlights the constant threat of violence within prison walls, and the dedication of federal agencies to maintaining order – however fragile – within those confines.
Assistant United States Attorney Tatum R. Wilson skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring O’Meara was held accountable for his actions.
