Mark Arome Okuo, Romance Fraud, Massachusetts 2023

Boston – In a grim twist of online deceit, Canton’s Mark Arome Okuo, 43, has admitted his role in a massive $1 million romance fraud conspiracy. The defendant stood before U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin on January 27, 2023, pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud.

Okuo’s arrest in March 2021 marked the beginning of his downfall. Since then, he has been locked up awaiting sentence, which is scheduled for March 29, 2023.

This sinister scheme targeted individuals across the United States through online romance scams. Okuo and his conspirators crafted fake profiles on dating sites and social media to gain trust, only to extort money from unsuspecting victims under false pretenses.

With cunning tactics, Okuo used aliases and fake passports to open numerous fraudulent bank accounts in the Boston area. He strategically withdrew sums less than $10,000 to avoid detection, accumulating a fortune of approximately $1 million in fraud proceeds.

The sentence for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud carries penalties up to 30 years in prison, five years of supervised release, and fines reaching $1 million or twice the gross gain, whichever is higher. Sentencing is at the discretion of the federal district court judge based on U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.

The case has been a collaborative effort by various law enforcement agencies, with United States Attorney Rachael S. Rollins and Matthew B. Millhollin, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New England, leading the charge. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service also provided vital assistance.
