Lisa J. Music, Social Security Benefit Fraud, Canton OH, 2023

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Lisa J. Music, a 54-year-old Canton resident, is facing serious federal charges after it was discovered she fraudulently obtained nearly $37,390 in Social Security benefits.

The grand jury’s two-count indictment against Music includes one count of theft of government property and one count of Social Security fraud. The charges stem from allegations that Music not only stole the funds but also failed to disclose her marriage to continue receiving the payments she was not entitled to.

According to the DOJ USAO, Music is accused of converting the Social Security payments made to her into her own use, while simultaneously hiding her second marriage. The investigation was conducted by the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General.

In a statement, United States Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach emphasized that the sentence Music could face will be determined by the court after considering various factors unique to this case, including her prior criminal record, if any. However, he clarified that sentences will not exceed the statutory maximum and are typically less than the maximum.

The Assistant U.S. Attorney handling the prosecution of Music is Lauren Bell. An indictment is merely a charge and does not constitute evidence of guilt. Music is entitled to a fair trial where the government must prove her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who attempt to defraud the Social Security system. As investigations continue, the community remains vigilant against such criminal activities.
