62-Year-Old Cape Canaveral Man Faces 20 Years for Child Porn Charges

Orlando, Florida – In a disturbing display of online depravity, 62-year-old William Alfred Harris of Cape Canaveral has pleaded guilty to possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). This guilty plea brings to light the disturbing reality of child exploitation in our communities, and the need for swift and severe justice.

According to the plea agreement, in January 2023, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) identified Harris as a target based on being a recipient or downloader of CSAM on a file-sharing platform. In May 2023, the FBI executed a search warrant at Harris’s residence and seized Harris’s laptop. A forensic examination of the computer revealed CSAM, three file wipers, and encryption software.

This case is yet another example of the devastating impact of child exploitation, and the importance of concerted efforts to combat it. Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the US Department of Justice, has been working tirelessly to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to identify and rescue victims.

Assistant United States Attorney Megan Testerman is prosecuting the case, which highlights the critical role that federal prosecutors play in ensuring that those who harm children are held accountable. This case serves as a stark reminder that child exploitation knows no boundaries, and that it is the responsibility of all law enforcement agencies to work together to prevent it.

The maximum penalty for Harris is 20 years in federal prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set, but it is clear that justice will be served in this case. The people of Brevard County and beyond can rest a little easier knowing that another predator has been brought to justice.
