In a shocking display of military misconduct, two army officers have been handed severe reprimands by the War Department. The punishment follows a complaint lodged by the wife of a prominent Salt Lake City capitalist, Mrs. Samuel Newhouse, who accused the officers of acting with blatant disregard for their duties.

According to eyewitnesses, Mrs. Newhouse and a group of friends were driving through the grounds of Fort Douglas in an automobile last February when they were halted by Capt. A S Brooks. The officer drew his pistol and threatened the party, citing concerns over their speed – a claim disputed by Mrs. Newhouse, who insisted they were proceeding at a moderate pace.

The incident drew the attention of Acting Secretary of War Oliver, who sent a special inspector to investigate the matter. The findings, it seems, were damning. In a scathing reprimand, Sec. Oliver condemned Capt. Brooks’ actions as ‘inexcusable,’ while also criticizing Col. Benjamin Lockwood, the commandant at Fort Douglas, for failing to provide adequate satisfaction to Mrs. Newhouse.

The reprimands, transmitted on Wednesday, serve as a stark reminder of the need for accountability within the military. As one observer noted, ‘Such behavior has no place in our armed forces.’ The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for greater scrutiny of military conduct.

For Mrs. Newhouse and her friends, the ordeal has left a lasting impression. ‘We were simply driving through the fort when suddenly we were confronted by Capt. Brooks,’ she recalled. ‘His actions were completely unacceptable, and I’m just grateful that no one was hurt.’

In the end, it seems that the officers’ actions have had consequences. The War Department’s reprimands serve as a stern warning to those who would abuse their authority. As one official noted, ‘We take such incidents very seriously, and we will not tolerate this kind of behavior.’
