Reshay Rashard Nelson, Possessing Firearm by Convicted Felon, Florida 2025

Reshay Rashard Nelson, a 45-year-old resident of Tampa, Florida, was slammed with a 15-year federal prison sentence by U.S. District Judge Thomas Barber for his brazen act of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The grim reality of Nelson’s criminal history was laid bare in April 2025 when he entered a guilty plea.

On April 10, 2023, a routine traffic stop by Tampa Police Department officers took an ominous turn. During the search of Nelson and his vehicle, a trove of illegal substances and weapons were uncovered: an ounce of cocaine, a scale, and a loaded firearm. Nelson’s prior convictions for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, obstructing an officer with violence, possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell, and trafficking in cocaine were the catalyst for his enhanced sentence under the Armed Career Criminal Act.

Investigation into this case was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the St. Petersburg Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney David P. Sullivan led the prosecution, ensuring that justice was served.

This conviction is a testament to Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN)’s unwavering commitment to reducing violent crime and gun violence in our communities. Launched on May 26, 2021, the Department’s strategic approach includes fostering trust, supporting community-based organizations, setting enforcement priorities, and measuring results.

Project Safe Neighborhoods’ core principles are at play here: building legitimacy, preventing violence, and making neighborhoods safer for all. Nelson’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who ignore the law and place their own interests above community safety.
