A notorious identity thief has finally met his match. Kamali Rives, 34, of Georgia, has been sentenced to a hefty 19 years, six months in federal prison for his role in a brazen identity theft and fraud scheme.
Rives and his co-conspirators ran multiple scams that swindled over $2 million from unsuspecting victims. The schemes, which dated back to at least 2010, involved stealing identities, opening bank accounts, cashing checks, taking out loans, and making credit purchases using the stolen information.
“Rives made his living for years by victimizing hundreds of people,” said U.S. Attorney John Horn. “He used the stolen identities to open bank accounts and write checks in other people’s names, as well as taking out loans and making purchases on phony credit cards. He ultimately had no regard for the financial hardships he caused the people whose identities were stolen.”
Rives was aided by co-defendant Rashon Bohannon, 34, of Lilburn, Georgia, who maintained hundreds of files containing ‘profiles’ of their victims, including names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, bank information, credit card numbers, and credit reports.
One of the schemes involved conspiring with Jimia Fannin, 36, and Ashley Posey, 31, both of Atlanta, Georgia, to steal corporate checks from Bank of America. Fannin, who was employed by Bank of America in its lockbox unit, stole numerous checks and gave them to Rives and Bohannon.
The duo then recruited ‘runners’ to open checking accounts at other banks in Georgia and deposit the checks. Rives and Bohannon also used the stolen check information to access the bank accounts held by the account holders who had written the checks, changing the customer information and withdrawing money for their own use.
Rives’ scheme was finally uncovered in 2013, after officers from the College Park Police Department executed a search warrant at his office space, where they found evidence of identity theft and drug activity. Rives’ sentence should serve as a warning to those who engage in similar crimes: the consequences will be severe.
