Christine Rahl, Healthcare Fraud and Money Laundering, Georgia 2014

Christine Rahl, 46, of Social Circle, Georgia, was handed a severe blow to her freedom today as she was sentenced to 57 months in federal prison for a brazen healthcare fraud and money laundering scheme that spanned over five years. The former payroll manager at Marmalade Health, which operates Abbey Hospice, faces additional supervised release and a $500 mandatory assessment following her term.

The United States Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, Michael J. Moore, announced the sentence on July 31 before Judge C. Ashley Royal in Macon. Rahl was also ordered to pay nearly $1.6 million in restitution for her theft from the hospice’s accounts.

According to court documents, Rahl exploited her position to give herself unauthorized raises and falsify expenses, depositing the illicit funds into her Wells Fargo Bank account. She then used these proceeds to fund her personal expenditures, including credit card purchases.

‘When Ms. Rahl committed healthcare fraud and embezzlement, she stole from a system designed to help those who are critically or terminally ill,’ said U.S. Attorney Moore. ‘We will continue to use our investigative resources to vigorously prosecute individuals who defraud the healthcare system, and we will collect full restitution from Rahl just as we hold her accountable for her fraud.’

Veronica Hyman-Pillot, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation, echoed Moore’s sentiment. ‘It is our hope that today’s sentence sends a strong message that embezzlement and avoiding tax obligations can result in jail time,’ she stated.

The investigation into Rahl’s crimes was led by agents from the Human Health Service and the IRS. Assistant United States Attorney Sharon Ratley prosecuted the case. Inquiries should be directed to Sue McKinney, Public Affairs Specialist at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, at (478) 621-2602.
