Edward L. Stief, Jr., Wire Fraud, Illinois 2024

Edward L. Stief, Jr., a 42-year-old from Effingham County, Illinois, has admitted in federal court to siphoning off an estimated $338,773 from an elderly victim through wire fraud and other charges.

Benton, Ill. – The defendant entered guilty pleas to one count of wire fraud, one count of mail fraud, and one count of unlawful monetary transactions involving criminal derived property. Stief’s sentencing hearing is set for Dec. 2 at the federal courthouse in Benton.

“The defendant posed as a trusted helper, offering lawn care services to gain the victim’s confidence, only to exploit his trust,” said U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft. “He deceived this vulnerable victim into leaving a nursing home with false promises of care, just to pocket more money.”

According to court documents, Stief met the victim in May 2023, using misrepresentations to become his Financial and Healthcare Power of Attorney. He became a signatory on the victim’s bank accounts, cashing out life insurance policies and depositing most of the money into his own personal bank accounts.

In October 2023, Stief persuaded the victim to leave a nursing home facility under his care, where the victim was not properly cared for. The defendant faces up to 20 years’ imprisonment for wire and mail fraud and up to 10 years for the monetary transaction charge.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI Springfield Field Office and the Effingham Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathleen Howard is handling the prosecution of the case. The National Elder Fraud Hotline is available at (833) 372-8311 for victims over 60 to report crimes and access resources.
