Walter James Hulit, a 37-year-old man from Sioux City, Iowa, has been slammed with a 24-month federal prison sentence for failing to register as a sex offender, according to United States Attorney Lesley A. Woods. The sentencing took place on August 7, 2025, in Omaha, Nebraska’s federal court.
Hulit was first convicted of sexual abuse of a minor on June 12, 2020, and sentenced to 41 months behind bars followed by a five-year supervised release term. However, after being released from prison in June 2022, he flouted the law once more. On November 18, 2024, Hulit was nabbed in Winnebago, Nebraska, where authorities discovered that he had not registered at his actual residence on the Winnebago Reservation as required by law.
The U.S. Marshals Service investigation found that Hulit had been lying about his location, registering as a resident of Sioux City instead of Winnebago. He was aware of his obligation to register but failed to do so between October 2024 and November 2024, when he was finally apprehended.

The program has been tirelessly working since May 2006 to track down, arrest, and prosecute those who exploit children through the Internet, while also identifying and rescuing victims. Hulit’s conviction and subsequent sentence come as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who renege on their obligations to register as sex offenders. The federal system offers no parole, meaning that Hulit will serve his entire 24-month term before beginning a six-year supervised release period upon his release from prison.
