Council Bluffs, IA – In a chilling sentence that underscores the deadly consequences of drug trafficking, Walter J. O’Donohue III has been handed a 15-year prison term for his role in a fentanyl smuggling operation that claimed lives and caused severe injuries.
O’Donohue, 35, was part of a network that imported and distributed acetyl fentanyl from China to Iowa and Nebraska. The investigation that led to O’Donohue’s conviction began with the tragic death of a 20-year-old man in Carter Lake, Iowa, whose lifeless body was discovered on June 28, 2015. Another survivor had been rushed to a hospital on life support.
Charles Beuterbaugh, another defendant in the case, supplied the lethal substance that caused both victims’ overdoses. Beuterbaugh sourced the fentanyl from an organization that started distributing it in November 2014 and continued until April 2016.
O’Donohue’s involvement was revealed through further investigation, showing he was the importer of acetyl fentanyl that eventually reached Beuterbaugh. The court also sentenced O’Donohue to a $50,000 fine and five years of supervised release following his prison term.
Several others have already been sentenced for their roles in this conspiracy. Dustin C. Sullivan received 162 months, Cody Lanus was given 144 months, and Michael David Redmond Jr. got 120 months. Amalia N. Pandis’s sentencing is still pending.
The investigation into this drug ring was a collaborative effort by the Carter Lake Police Department, Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, Council Bluffs Police Department, Southwest Iowa Narcotics Task Force, Omaha Police Department, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Iowa Division of Narcotic Enforcement, United States Postal Inspection Service, and United States Drug Enforcement Administration-Nebraska. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
