George, Iowa resident John Rothkehl Jr., 40, was handed a 130-month federal prison sentence after being convicted of conspiring to distribute, distributing, and possessing with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The sentence was announced on August 21, 2025, following Rothkehl’s guilty plea on April 11, 2025.
Evidence against Rothkehl demonstrated a conspiracy involving the distribution of at least 150 grams of pure meth from January 2022 until October 2024. In September 2024, Rothkehl sold meth to an individual working with law enforcement. A subsequent traffic stop in October 2024 revealed over 35 grams of methamphetamine in his vehicle, confirming his intent to distribute.
Rothkehl’s arrest also uncovered a fentanyl pill hidden in his underwear. Further investigation revealed that he traveled to Spencer, Iowa, and South Sioux City, Nebraska, to acquire meth for distribution in the George area.
Sentenced by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City, Rothkehl faces an additional 5 years of supervised release following his prison term. There is no parole available in the federal system.
The case was a collaborative effort by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, Sioux City Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, and more. Assistant United States Attorneys Shawn Wehde and Kraig R. Hamit prosecuted the case.
