Kurt Neldeberg, 64, of Whiting, Iowa, pleaded guilty to tax fraud on February 28, 2018, in federal court in Sioux City. The charge stems from a years-long scheme to conceal income from grain sales, leaving the federal government short more than $300,000 in unpaid taxes.
Neldeberg admitted in court that between 2009 and 2012, he failed to report approximately $315,512 in income generated from farm grain sales. The money was deposited directly into personal bank accounts, bypassing official farm records and bookkeeping channels. He knowingly withheld this financial activity from both his bookkeeper and tax preparer, ensuring the underreporting would go undetected.
By omitting the income, Neldeberg falsified his Schedule F filings on his joint federal tax returns, resulting in significantly reduced tax liability for each of the four years. The admitted deception led to substantial tax losses and demonstrated a willful pattern of financial evasion, prosecutors say.
The case, prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde, was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service. Authorities say the investigation uncovered a deliberate effort to manipulate farm income records, exploiting the complexity of agricultural accounting to mask illicit gains.
Sentencing is pending before United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett, scheduled after a presentence report is completed. Neldeberg remains free on bond. He faces a maximum penalty of 3 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and up to one year of supervised release.
In addition to criminal penalties, Neldeberg will be required to pay back all taxes determined to be owed, plus interest and civil penalties. The case, filed under number 18-4012, is publicly accessible via the Northern District of Iowa’s court electronic filing system. Follow updates at @USAO_NDIA.
