A Lorain man has been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for having nearly 10 grams of the deadly opioid carfentanil, a substance so potent it could have killed thousands of people.
Manuel Latorre, 27, of Lorain, pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and one count of distribution of a controlled substance. His arrest and prosecution are a testament to the ongoing efforts of federal law enforcement to combat the opioid epidemic.
Latorre possessed more than 9.3 grams of carfentanil between August and October 2017, according to court documents. This amount of the highly toxic substance is staggering, and its potential impact is a chilling reminder of the dangers of the opioid crisis.
Latorre’s lengthy rap sheet, which includes approximately 50 prior arrests and 17 convictions as an adult, did little to sway the judge’s decision. His history of crime and repeated run-ins with the law only served to underscore the severity of his latest offense.
“This defendant had a weapon of mass destruction, just in a different form,” said U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman. “This amount of carfentanil could have killed thousands of people. Federal law enforcement will continue to work with our partners in Lorain County to bring to justice the people profiting from this drug epidemic.”
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Vasile Katsaros following an investigation by the Northern Ohio Law Enforcement Task Force, the FBI, and the Lorain Police Department. Their collaborative effort is a shining example of the kind of teamwork and dedication required to tackle the complex and multifaceted issue of opioid trafficking.
Latorre’s sentence serves as a warning to those involved in the opioid trade: the consequences of getting caught are severe and long-lasting. As the opioid epidemic continues to ravage communities across the country, it is more important than ever that law enforcement remains vigilant and committed to bringing those responsible to justice.
