Cedar Rapids Felon Found Guilty of Gun Possession
Carl Anthony McArthur, a 40-year-old convicted felon from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been found guilty of possessing a firearm after a botched armed robbery attempt.
According to evidence presented at a bench trial on May 14, 2019, McArthur and another individual entered a home on 20th Avenue in Cedar Rapids, where they held at least four people at gunpoint while demanding money. The group quickly called 9-1-1, and police arrived shortly after. McArthur and the other individual attempted to hide the guns, but officers found two loaded firearms underneath clothes and a blanket.
Additionally, officers discovered two baggies of methamphetamine in McArthur’s pockets. McArthur admitted that he had been at the house earlier in the day to obtain the illicit substance. His prior convictions, including a 2003 domestic violence conviction and a 2009 conviction for unlawfully possessing a gun, prohibited him from possessing firearms.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime through community partnerships and targeted enforcement efforts. Through PSN, local stakeholders work together to identify pressing crime issues and develop comprehensive solutions.
McArthur is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until sentencing. A date has not yet been set. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Ashley Corkery and Pat Reinert, with investigation led by the Cedar Rapids Safe Streets Task Force, composed of representatives from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
