Threats Against Elected Official Land Local Man Behind Bars

ALBANY, NEW YORK – Carlo Di Padova, a 61-year-old man from New York, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for mailing a threatening communication and impeding, intimidating, and interfering with a federal official by threat.

District Attorney Antoinette T. Bacon and Jodi Cohen, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), announced the sentencing.

According to the evidence presented, Di Padova admitted to sending a letter to a United States Senator that contained a white powdery substance and stated that Di Padova planned to have someone shoot the Senator in the head. The powder in the letter was harmless.

The 18-month term of imprisonment, imposed on June 16, 2021, will run consecutive to a 16-year-to-life sentence that Di Padova was serving in New York State custody at the time of his indictment.

This case was investigated by the FBI and the New York State Department of Correction and Community Supervision, Office of Special Investigation. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily C. Powers.

In a statement, officials praised the work of the FBI and the Office of Special Investigation for their diligence in bringing this case to justice. The sentencing serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of threatening elected officials.
