Newark Man Sentenced to 13.5 Years in Prison for Firearms and Heroin
A previously convicted felon from Newark has been sentenced to 162 months in prison for multiple counts of illegal firearms possession and drug distribution.
Carlos Bess, 39, pleaded guilty to two counts of illegal possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and four counts of distribution and possession with intent to distribute heroin and cocaine.
According to documents filed in the case, since June 2015, agents with the DEA and ATF have been investigating the sales of narcotics and the unlawful possession of firearms by convicted felons. The investigation revealed that on July 23, 2015, Bess unlawfully possessed two Rebel Arms AR-15 rifles.
On September 30, 2015, and December 1, 2015, Bess sold heroin to another individual in Newark. During a search of a residence controlled by Bess in Newark, federal agents recovered five firearms, including a loaded .357 revolver and a 12-gauge shotgun, as well as more heroin and over 500 grams of cocaine.
U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito credited special agents with the ATF and DEA with the investigation leading to Bess’s sentencing.
