TRENTON, N.J. – A doctor with offices in Asbury Park and Brooklyn pleaded guilty to distributing anabolic steroids and possessing marijuana with intent to distribute.
Kevin Custis, 53, of Belle Mead, New Jersey, pleaded guilty before Judge Peter G. Sheridan in Trenton federal court to an information charging him with one count of distributing anabolic steroids and one count of possessing marijuana with intent to distribute.
According to documents filed in this case and statements in court, Custis wrote and delivered numerous prescriptions for various types of anabolic steroids to two patients in 2016 and 2017. He admitted that he knew these prescriptions were not for the treatment of any actual medical condition, but were solely for muscle enhancement, beauty, and muscle building and fitness competitions.
On June 14, 2017, agents and investigators from the Drug Enforcement Agency searched his home and found more than four kilograms of marijuana and more than 150 grams of tetrahydrocannobinal oil. Custis admitted that he intended to distribute these substances and that he had no authority under any federal or state law or regulation to do so.
Custis also admitted that he prepared marijuana products for patients in his home kitchen. The count of distributing anabolic steroids carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $500,000 fine. The count of possessing marijuana carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 9, 2018. U.S. Attorney Carpenito credited investigators for the DEA, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Valerie A. Nickerson; officers of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey-Office of the Inspector General, under the direction of Michael Nestor; and the N.J. Division of Consumer Affairs, under the direction of Acting Director Kevin Jespersen, with the investigation leading to today’s guilty plea.
The government is represented by Senior Litigation Counsel David E. Malagold of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division. Defense counsel is Rubin Sinins, Esq., of Springfield, New Jersey.
The investigation into Custis’s illicit activities is a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked power and corruption within our medical community.
