Perth Amboy Man Admits Role in Ethylone Distribution Conspiracy

A 35-year-old Perth Amboy man has pleaded guilty to his role in a conspiracy to distribute approximately 1.5 kilograms of ethylone, a Schedule I controlled substance, in and around Middlesex County, New Jersey.

Paul Hutchison admitted to conspiring with others to distribute the synthetic drug, which is also known as ‘bath salts’ or ‘molly,’ the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced. The search of Hutchison’s residence on October 16, 2015, revealed the presence of 1.5 kilograms of ethylone.

Ethylone is an illegal synthetic drug that stimulates the central nervous system and can cause hallucinogenic effects, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The maximum penalty for the conspiracy charge is 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.

Hutchison is scheduled to be sentenced on October 16, 2017. The investigation was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), under the direction of Charge Carl J. Kotowski in Newark.

The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan M. Peck of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Organized Crime/Drug Enforcement Task Force Unit.

Defense Counsel for Hutchison is Bruce Regenstreich Esq., of New York.

The guilty plea is a significant blow to the distribution of synthetic drugs in New Jersey. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to pursue those involved in the distribution of these dangerous substances.
