Carlos Rafael Castaneda Mendez, Mortgage Fraud, Florida 2021

MIAMI, FL – A brazen scheme to siphon nearly $10 million from unsuspecting homeowners has landed seven individuals in federal prison. The crew, operating in upscale South Florida neighborhoods, preyed on absent owners, fabricating identities and loan documents to bleed equity from unencumbered properties. The U.S. Secret Service, leading the investigation, peeled back layers of deception to reveal a sophisticated operation fueled by greed and audacity.

The con worked like this: fraudsters identified prime residential homes free of mortgages. They then stole the identity information of the rightful owners, creating counterfeit foreign passports – complete with photos of co-conspirators – to impersonate the homeowners. These imposters would appear at loan closings, applying for mortgages from private lenders and opening bank accounts in the stolen names. Millions in loan funds were then diverted to purchase luxury cars, expensive watches, and other high-end goods.

Federal District Judge handed down the following sentences this week: Carlos Rafael Castaneda Mendez, 34, of Miami, received a hefty 78 months. Alejandro Boada Oliveros, 45, of Miami, will spend 46 months behind bars. Jonnathan Jesus Gonzalez, 33, of Miami, was sentenced to 44 months. Yanjeisis Alejandra Pompa Villafane, 25, of Hialeah, received 28 months. Lilia Rosa Morales Moreno, 45, of Miami, will serve 30 months. Katherine Hansen Mendoza, 25, of Miami, got a relatively light seven months, while Isbel Rodriguez Batista, 23, of Teaneck, New Jersey, was sentenced to 30 months.

This wasn’t a smash-and-grab; it was a calculated, long-term exploitation of the financial system. The investigation, spearheaded by the U.S. Secret Service’s Miami Field Office alongside Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Aventura Police Department, revealed a network of individuals playing specific roles in the elaborate fraud. The stolen funds didn’t just disappear into the ether; they funded a lavish lifestyle for those involved.

Acting U.S. Attorney Juan Antonio Gonzalez for the Southern District of Florida, alongside USSS Special Agent in Charge Brian Swain and HSI Special Agent in Charge Anthony Salisbury, announced the sentences. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie Hauser is leading the prosecution, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicole Grosnoff handling the asset forfeiture – a critical step in recovering stolen funds and holding the perpetrators accountable. Charges remain pending against other individuals connected to the scheme, and authorities remind the public that an indictment is merely an accusation.

Court documents related to case no. 20-cr-20155 are available for public viewing on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida website. This case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of the mortgage system and the lengths to which criminals will go to exploit it. The Grimy Times will continue to follow developments as additional charges are pursued and assets are recovered.
