Cedar Rapids, IA – Carlos Lopez-Pinto, a 36-year-old citizen of Mexico living in Iowa, has been handed a two-year federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to unlawful possession of identification documents. The court’s decision came down the day following Lopez-Pinto’s guilty plea on February 21, 2014.
In a shocking case of identity theft, Lopez-Pinto admitted to using a Social Security card and its corresponding number, along with a fraudulent Minnesota Identification Card, to apply for work under a different name. The deception was fueled by his possession of the victim’s birth certificate, which he used to claim the Social Security Number had been issued in his name.
Lopez-Pinto’s criminal activities were uncovered when agents from the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) investigated the employment application. United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade presided over the sentencing, imposing a 24-month imprisonment term and a special assessment of $100. Lopez-Pinto must also serve a three-year supervised release following his prison sentence.
Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt prosecuted the case, while ICE agents led the investigation. The defendant is currently being held in U.S. Marshal’s custody pending transportation to federal prison.
